Why is One-on-One Instruction So Important?
One-on-One instruction is by far the most efficient and effective, and is the only way we teach. The following highlights why we believe one-on-one instruction is imperative to the learning process.
The more students there are, the less attention each one gets.
When there are two students, each ones personal attention gets cut in half. when there are three, each student gets only 20 minutes of attention out of each hour. Shouldn't students receive undivided attention for the time they are paying for?
Instructors can’t adapt to more than one student at once.
The role of an instructor is to bend and adapt to the needs of the student as necessary. Sessions should be a dynamic environment where the tutor is actively leading the student towards understanding. While the student is working, our tutors plan or adjust what will come next.
Programs with more than one student per instructor use the time when one student is working to help other students. By design, these programs can only follow static guidelines; there can be no improvisation or deviation from the plan. This results in reduced effectiveness.
Students often have to ask for help in these environments
Many environments with more than one student per tutor involve each student working until they get stuck, and then asking for help. But what if a child is simply incorrect? An instructor should be able to intervene immediately and take action if necessary so that negative habits aren’t reinforced.
More students means more people to judge
Children often report that the reason they don’t ask questions in class is because they fear judgment and ridicule from their peers. An effective tutoring program removes these pressures from the learning environment. How can a child feel free from judgment with peers sitting right beside them?
A good question to ask is why would any tutoring organization not be One-on-One? Unfortunately the answer has more to do with profit margins than with optimizing learning.
